LivingLean | Gaining Power Over Food

The obesity problem

The obesity epidemic continues to worsen in the US, which is why billions of dollars are spent on weight management programs each year.

Roughly two-thirds of Americans are overweight, and almost 40% of the US adult population is obese. An obese employee costs their employer an estimated $1,935 a year in increased health costs, lost productivity and absenteeism.

Why most obesity solutions fall short

A recent Duke University study of workplace weight management programs found that the biggest barrier to healthy eating for obese participants isn’t that they don’t know what, when, or how to eat—it’s that they can’t resist the temptation to eat unhealthy or fattening foods.

Typical behavior modification strategies focus on the use of willpower to overcome cravings, but they don’t address the psychological drivers that lead people to crave certain foods or repeat unhealthy eating patterns. Unless a weight management program tackles this issue head-on, participants almost always go back to their unhealthy eating habits and regain the weight.

The SelfHelpWorks approach

The LivingLean online weight management program focuses on changing the way participants think and feel about food and eating rather than telling them what diet to follow. Using a proprietary, evidence-based cognitive behavioral training process, LivingLean breaks down and replaces the underlying beliefs, thoughts, and emotions that create food cravings and perpetuate unhealthy eating habits. The result is genuine, lasting behavior change and a higher quality of life.

In a case study conducted by a UCLA professor, the average weight loss for those who completed the LivingLean weight management program was 26.6 pounds and 95.9% rated the program as either “very good” or “excellent”.

LivingLean is accessible conveniently and privately 24/7 via PC, tablet or smartphone.

Research & Statistics

A large national wellness program compared Health Risk Assessment scores to the prior year for members who had completed condition-appropriate SelfHelpWorks programs. 62% of those considered obese (BMI > 30) reduced their BMI by an average of 12% after completing LivingLean.

A corporate client engaged David Heber, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine and Public Health and Director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition at the University of California, Los Angeles, to evaluate the benefits of LivingLean. Participants that completed the program as much as 6-12 months previously had lost an average of 26.6 pounds.
